Pro Multi-Camera Studio Kit

A three-camera live-switched studio for podcasts, courses and livestreams. Every device below has a named port on the device next to it. The single SDI pair to each camera is what this build is buying: one coax carries picture out, the return coax carries program, tally, iris and white-balance control, and talkback back in.

Kit total$16,757.71
Read this before the parts listAs specified this build is $16,757.71 — about $1,760 over a $15,000 ceiling. That is not padding. Three things moved in 2026 and all three landed here:
  • NAND and DRAM prices spiked. A 2 TB T7 Shield is $574.99 today; storage used to be rounding error.
  • Apple raised the Mac mini three times — the M4 went $599 → $699 in June.
  • The talkback requirement forces the switcher. Only the HD8 ISO ($3,295) in Blackmagic's sub-$5K range has a talkback headset port and a real audio input. There is no cheaper way to meet the brief.

Mics never enter a camera — they enter the switcher. Audio embedded at a camera stays locked to that camera and drifts against the other two the moment you cut. Audio arriving on MADI is one source, sample-locked to the switcher clock, in sync with whichever camera is on program.

What this build cannot do

  • UHD program. The HD8 is a 1080p switcher fed by 4K sensors — a ceiling, not a compromise you upgrade past.
  • Genlock. Every input rides a frame sync; there is no house reference, which stops working the day you add a second switcher or a playout device.
  • Audio safety recording. The only multitrack lives inside the switcher — if it stops writing you lose picture and sound together.
  • Redundancy of any kind: one switcher, one disk, one uplink, one operator.
  • Exposure by scope. You are setting off false colour and the multiview — fine in a windowless room, not on a location day.

Upgrade path

  • Carries forward from MID, 100%: mics, boom arms, headphones, all lighting and stands, tripods, computer, Resolve licence, ISO drive, multiview monitor, UPS. Roughly $7,700 of a $16,758 kit a MID customer never re-buys.
  • Carries forward partially: MID cameras with SDI out plug straight in. HDMI-only cameras can front-end a converter and keep working — but picture only, no tally, control or talkback.
  • Replaced: the switcher, and every HDMI cable. That is the only genuinely stranded asset in a MID build — worth saying honestly at the point of sale.
  • Buy in this order: HD8 first (it accepts old cameras through converters, so the studio never goes dark), then cameras one at a time, then the Mic Converter once seat count justifies MADI.

How this build goes wrong

  • Format mismatch. These cameras have no genlock and free-run; the ATEM frame-syncs each input. One camera on a different standard triggers a format conversion in that input only — so lip sync is right on CAM 1 and wrong on CAM 3, and it reads as "the switcher is glitchy." Lock all three and the switcher to 1080p59.94 and confirm in the multiview, not in a menu.
  • DC extension. 2.08 A at 12 V over 25 ft of 18 AWG drops 0.66 V. An undervolted camera does not die, it flickers — intermittent SDI dropouts that look exactly like a bad cable. You will replace two good coax runs before checking the rail. Brick at the camera, mains to the brick.
  • The micro-BNC pigtail. Length is not the problem on SDI — 255 ft of headroom against a 25 ft run. Connectors are. Dress the pigtail so the camera body never carries cable weight and keep spares.
  • Audio delay. Video takes 2–3 frames through camera and switcher; MADI audio takes under a millisecond, so mics arrive early. Delay them in Fairlight to match — measure with a clap and an ISO file, never set it by eye.

The other side

What a broadcast engineer would criticise.

If the promise is systems that work together, it has to include the parts that do not.

“It's an HD switcher fed by 4K cameras. You're throwing away three quarters of the sensor.”

Fair, and stated up front. 1080p is the delivery format and HD downsampled from 4K is cleaner than native HD. But it is a ceiling — the HD8 gets replaced, not expanded.

“No genlock anywhere. Every input rides a frame sync and you have no house reference.”

Correct. Acceptable for three local cameras into one switcher. It stops being acceptable the day you add a playout device or a second switcher — and this camera cannot take a reference.

“Micro-BNC on a permanent install. That's a mobile-rig connector on a fixed rig.”

The strongest criticism here. It is the direct cost of $1,205 bodies over $2,135 ones. Mitigated by strain relief and spares; solved properly by the Studio Camera 4K Pro G2.

“No audio safety recording. If the HD8 stops writing you lose picture and sound in the same instant.”

True and not budgeted. A field recorder on a mic split is roughly $400 and it is the first thing to add above this kit — ahead of better cameras, ahead of better glass.

“No redundancy. One switcher, one disk, one uplink, one operator.”

Accurate. Single points of failure are the defining property of this tier; naming them is the honest version. Cheapest mitigation: a second SSD and LTE failover.

“Consumer LED fixtures with fans, three feet from open mics.”

The Halo 60x is specified at 28 dBA precisely for this. Verify on install day with recorded room tone, and run the key lower in a bigger modifier rather than full with the fan up.

“Where's the rack? This is a table of boxes, not an installation.”

Deliberately out of scope for a shippable kit. A 12U rack, shelf, BNC patch panel and PDU is $600–900 of install work — and the right first upsell for a permanent room.
