A complete talking-head and podcast chain for one person in a spare room. Video and audio never share a wire in this build — that is deliberate. If the interface hiccups, video keeps rolling, and the reverse. The camera streams over USB-C as a UVC device, so there is no capture card here at all; that is a MID problem, not an Entry one.

What this build cannot do
- Multicam. One camera, one angle. No cutaway without a second full camera and a second cable path.
- Live switching. No hardware program output and no program monitor — cutting is OBS scenes only.
- Two-person interviews. The Scarlett Solo has exactly one mic input. It physically cannot do it.
- Run-and-gun. The mic is arm-mounted to a fixed desk. No wireless lav, no walk-and-talk.
- Deep grading. The ZV-E10 records 8-bit internally — real latitude in S-Log, nowhere near 10-bit 4:2:2.
- Fix an untreated room. Close-talking a dynamic manages reflections, it does not eliminate them. Bare walls and hardwood still sound boxy, and no mic purchase fixes that.
Upgrade path
- Carries forward as-is: the PodMic, the PSA1+ arm, the ATH-M20x, the Hosa XLR cable and the SD card. Monitoring and cabling have no upgrade cycle.
- Carries forward demoted: the Scarlett Solo stops being primary once you need a second mic input, but becomes the travel and backup interface. The Elgato Key Light becomes a fill or rim light once a bigger key joins.
- Carries forward, and this is the point: the 16–50mm lens. E-mount is what you are actually buying into — when the body gets replaced, the glass moves across for free.
- Does NOT carry forward: the NP-FW50 spare battery. MID specifies the ZV-E10 II, which uses NP-FZ100 — a different pack. Treat the spare as consumed by this tier.
- Also replaced: the ZV-E10 body itself (shortest useful life in the kit, 2–4 years), the PIXI tripod, and the USB cable.
How this build goes wrong
- Camera stuck in the wrong USB mode. The ZV-E10 defaults to PC Remote or Mass Storage, not Streaming. Plug it in without changing that setting and OBS shows no camera or a frozen black frame — which reads as a broken camera or a broken cable, and it is neither. Set Shooting Mode → USB Streaming before every session, not just the first.
- Gain staged wrong. The PodMic is naturally quiet and the Solo has a lot of headroom, which tempts people to crank until the meter looks loud — clipping or hiss. The opposite error is just as common: leaving gain low and boosting in post, which raises the noise floor with the voice. Peaks at −12 to −6 dB, headroom to spare.
- Session-to-session inconsistency. Recording near a window so daylight and the LED mix and drift as the weather changes; and running one internal battery with no swap plan so a long episode cuts out mid-sentence. Close the blinds, let the Key Light be the only source, and swap the battery at a natural break rather than waiting for the warning.
Not in the kit totalThe computer is not in the kit total. Two USB devices means two free, direct ports — do not run the camera and the interface off one unpowered hub, which causes exactly the intermittent audio dropout and camera brownout that is maddening to diagnose. For editing 4K afterwards, budget an 8th-gen Intel/Ryzen 5-class CPU or Apple M-series with at least 16 GB RAM.
