- The 2026 NAND/DRAM shortage inflated every storage line roughly 40–60% over historical pricing.
- Three items fix documented failure modes rather than being nice-to-haves: the cooling fans (camera overheat shutdown), the PSA1+ arms (SM7B sag), and the redundant SD/microSD backups.
- Cutting those three saves about $216 and reintroduces the exact problems they exist to prevent.

What this build cannot do
- Hardware switching. OBS chooses what is on screen, so the computer is a single point of failure for the whole program feed in a way a switcher is not.
- Camera control or tally. HDMI has no return path — iris, white balance and gain are set by hand at each body.
- Long cable runs. HDMI is reliable to roughly 15–25 ft; past that you are buying active or optical, which is an amplifier in the signal path.
- Genlock or timecode. Sync comes from both feeds landing on one computer clock, which is adequate for a locked-off two-camera interview and nothing more.
- A third and fourth angle without more USB bandwidth than most machines have.
Upgrade path
- Carries forward from ENTRY: the single camera body demotes to a B-cam or cutaway camera; SD cards, a tripod and any single light carry forward as spares. A basic USB mic does not — the RODECaster is a different signal path entirely.
- Carries forward into PRO: both ZV-E10 II bodies keep working as a third or fourth angle once an ATEM adds inputs. The RODECaster keeps its job as preamp and local audio backup — an ATEM handles video, not XLR preamps.
- Also forward: all lighting, tripods, boom arms, XLR cables and the SSD/SD backup strategy. That is workflow infrastructure, not tier-specific gear.
- Does not carry: both Cam Links, and the OBS software-switching workflow itself. PRO cameras go direct over SDI into the ATEM, skipping USB capture entirely.
How this build goes wrong
- Bandwidth starvation. Both Cam Links, the RODECaster and the SSD get plugged into one passive hub because the computer "only has a few ports." Two 4K30 capture streams need real independent USB 3.0 lanes — sharing one causes dropped frames, a frozen source, or one that silently goes black mid-record. One device per host port, verified in a real test session before the first live one.
- Overheat shutdown. Recording 4K60 out of habit when the capture chain only uses 4K30, and skipping the $59 fan to save money. The documented ~24-minute thermal cutout lands mid-interview. Shoot the framerate the chain needs and treat the fan as required equipment.
- Audio that is technically synced but sounds wrong. Trusting default gain on an SM7B without checking headroom, or letting a cheap arm sag over a session and change proximity effect minute by minute. Neither throws an error — it just sounds progressively worse and is rarely caught until the edit. Monitor on headphones through the first five minutes of every session, not just at setup.
Not in the kit totalThe computer is not in the kit total, since most creators at this tier own one — but it needs to be specific: 16 GB RAM minimum (24 GB if OBS runs alongside a call app), and independent USB 3.0 bandwidth for each Cam Link plus the RODECaster plus the SSD. A Mac mini M4 in 24 GB/512 GB covers this via three Thunderbolt 4 ports plus two USB-C, one device per port.
